Going for the Look

After reading the article,"Going for the Look, but Risking Discrimination", I was in shock on how big clothing line companies are known to pick and choose who they hire based on how they look. Hiring managers are told to hire people who fit that "look". I currently work in the retail field for Banana Republic and let me tell you this I DO NOT fit their look they portray outside of work. I still do my job and make sales for them regardless of the way I look. Stores should take into consideration fitting the "look" but not mainly focus on it. Fitting the "look" doesn't mean the person is going to do the job any better than the person who doesn't. I actually have been overlooked because of my "look". About two months ago I applied for a job at PacSun and I got an interview based on my work experience. The person who interviewed me told me I did great and there was another person getting interviewed with me. The other person did fit the PacSun "look" but had no work experience and was younger, on the other hand, I've worked in retail for a year. I did not get the job but the other guy did because he fit the "look" but I did not because I did not. Stores should not overlook a potenial employee because they do not fit the look.

  1. I like what you said about employees should refrain from overlooking a potential employee, especially with experience in that field, but it could be their loss if they lose a great wokrer. So there is a risk in what they do but still its not right.

  2. I agree with you that people do not have to fit the look just to get their job done. Most of the time retail stores just focus on the look while they hire employees and don’t ask for their work experience and the retail store ends up having to struggle with that person because they do not know how to do their job.
